The Passing of Our Loved Ones

By Noelene J Ballangarry ( Artist )

The Spirit figure at the top is our Great Ancestor. He is looking down from Heaven, and receiving one of our people that has passed away.

The centre part is the burial site, and the figures on the outside are the family and the people gathering around.

The sun is at the very top and the little drops around the Burial Site form a sun shower. These are as if they are tear drops.

The figures at the bottom are our other ancestors that have already passed away, and they are all one their way up to heaven. Their spirits have come out, and the one who has now just passed away is about to join them.

The carpet snake is the Gumbayngirr Totem, and is the Protector of the People. He protects and no harm will come to them.

The Ancestors at the bottom have already been received, and they form into the stars at the top. The stars are looking down on their people, and watching over them.

This painting means a lot to me. It expresses the morning and hurt of our people - it is part of me..

It is about loss - we seem to just get over losing one and we are losing somebody else.
