MUDGIN-GAL HELPS
WOMEN'S HEALING
( Koori Mail Wed 29 May 2002)
In
an effort to help Koori women find hope and healing in their lives,
the Mudgin-Gal Aboriginal Corporation Women' s Centre in Sydney
recently launched the Aboriginal Women's Spiritual Healing Project.
The project is a 12-month program that consists of a series of residential
workshops for victims of domestic violence, sexual abuse, and drug
and alcohol abuse.
"We're very enthusiastic about this project, and we feel that
it can make a real difference to women's lives project officer Donna
lngram said. The objectives of the project are to strengthen women's
spirituality through the Healing process, to build the confidence
and self-esteem of victims of abuse, to empower Aboriginal women
to assess and take control of their lives with decision- making
skills, and provide opportunity for them to meet other victims to
share their stories and experiences," Ms lngram said.
The
project was launched by Neita Scott, a member, of the Premier's
Council for women. 'We, as women, must heal ourselves before we
can heal our communities," Ms Scott said. 'We have many problems
in the Koori community and by women coming together, that's healing
them so that they can then come back and start working with their
communities and heal their communities."
"It's about healing our communities - that's what this is all
about."
The workshops will be held at the Aboriginal Women's Healing House
retreat centre situated on the Razorback Ranges at Picton, in Sydney's
outer west. "The Healing House gives us the appropriate environment
with our sisters," says co-ordinator of the Healing House, Barbra
Asplett.. "It is a place where we can share our pain, share experiences,
reclaim our stories, yarn, address stress and how it affects our
body, spirit, soul, mind and relationships. It is a place for women
to come together, share, create and be renewed."
The first series of workshops will began Friday, May 17, to Wednesday,
May 22 ( 2002 ) at the Healing House. The Aboriginal Women's Spiritual
Healing Project is funded by the New South Wales Government's Casino
Community Benefit Fund, but Mudgin-Gal is seeking further avenues
of funding to support the project. Mudgin-Gal was started in 1992
as a referral and advocacy service to support Aboriginal women in
the local community.
