THE ABORIGINAL WOMEN'S HEALING HOUSE

The Aboriginal Catholic Ministry(ACM), under the direction of Father Frank Fletcher MSC and Barbra Asplet, at the time coordinator of the ACM, with the approval and financial support of the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney, set up the Aboriginal Women's Healing House in the country, on Mt Razorback near Picton. It has accommodation for about 15. Since its Official Opening on March 2000, many groups of women have benefited from its Healing Programs. Besides local groups and young women from the Redfern Community, Aboriginal Women have come from Nambucca Heads, Coonabarabran and other country Areas. More recently several programs have been run for Aboriginal men. The Healing House also runs Reconciliation Retreat/Workshops for non-Indigenous people. The Aboriginal staff of the Healing House works specifically with Aboriginal women who have suffered trauma associated with the Stolen Generation, either having themselves been stolen or having had children or relatives stolen. The Healing Programs use traditional and contemporary healing therapy, and those who have been through the program have expressed heartfelt appreciation for the experience.
